Kirk W. Caldwell, a partner at Ashford & Wriston, has practiced with the firm since 1984.

As a member of the firm's real property and litigation sections, Mr. Caldwell focuses his practice on financial institutions, real property and litigation. His experience includes:

  • Work-outs on loans involving hotels, apartment buildings and shopping centers;
  • Collection actions involving real estate secured and unsecured commercial loans;
  • Representing creditors in Chapter 13, Chapter 11 and Chapter 7 bankruptcies;
  • Representing lenders and the real estate industry in litigation.

Professional Activities:
Mr. Caldwell is a member of the Real Property and Financial Services section and is a past director and past secretary of the Young Lawyers Division of the Hawai`i State Bar Association and is a past director of the Legal Aid Society of Hawai`i. He served as the associate editor of the Hawai`i Bar News. He also was a member and treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Hawai`i Justice Foundation. He is a past director and president of the Friends of the Judiciary History Center. Mr. Caldwell is a current director of Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii. Mr. Caldwell is the author of "Metromedia, Inc. v. City of San Diego: The Conflict Between Aesthetic Zoning and Commercial Speech Protection; Hawaii's Billboard Law Under Fire," University of Hawai`i Law Review, Vol. 5, No. 1, 1983. Mr. Caldwell is also a member of The District of Columbia Bar.

Professional Recognition:
Mr. Caldwell has spoken before numerous financial institution groups, ranging from banks, savings and loan associations and credit unions to their trade associations regarding regulatory compliance and other matters pertaining to financial institutions.

Community Activities:
Mr. Caldwell has served since 2003 in the House of Representatives for the state of Hawai'i. He was Vice Chair of the Transportation Committee (2003 - 2005), and currently serves as Chairman of the Labor and Public Employment Committee (2005 - Present). Mr. Caldwell served on the Manoa Neighborhood Board and the Kaimuki Neighborhood Board. He also is a member of the Board of the Hawai'i branch of the International Dyslexia Association ("HEDA"). Mr. Caldwell has served on the Board of Directors of and is a past president of the Hawai'i Preparatory Academy Alumni Board. He served as co-chair of the Sidwell Friend's School (Washington, DC) annual auction for financial aid. Mr. Caldwell served as the Authorized Representative for Gore 2000 in Hawai'i.
